Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steens

Hip surgeries will be performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wolfram Steens, highly experienced German orthopedic surgeon for complex knee and hip interventions and a renowned specialist for joint revision. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steens looks back on thousands of surgeries.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steens: “A life with pain takes your physical and psychological strength. The decision for an artificial joint is an important and individual decision – all the more if your joint was already replaced and a second procedure becomes necessary. According to my experience the best surgical outcome depends on the adequate selection of the implant, the precise placement, and the post-operative rehabilitation. Prior to a surgery, we will take the time to listen to your story. We need to understand your health issues and concerns. It is your body. It is your health. Commonly, we find the best solution.”read more about ONZ specialist Dr. Assoc. Prof. Steens

Total hip replacement
Today’s artificial joints are designed to mimic your hip’s natural motion. At ONZ, we select your implant from a wide variety of implant types to customize your joint for your body and activity level. Why go to Germany?

Total hip replacement at ONZ GermanyThere is no surgery without a possible complication. This has to be taken into consideration! We have a very strict and thorough follow-up care following the principle: the earlier the complication is detected, the earlier counter action is taken, the higher is the chance to control it. We call it “the second line of defence”. Learn more about hip replacement at ONZ.

Joint revision surgery is a complex procedure that requires extensive preoperative planning, specialized implants and tools, and mastery of difficult surgical techniques as well as an excellent complication management to achieve long-lasting success. Your decision to have a revision joint replacement surgery performed will be based on several factors. The artificial joint may become painful or swollen, due to loosening, wear, or infection. The function of the implant may decline, resulting in a limp, stiffness, or instability. Radiographs may show a change in the position or condition of the artificial joint.

In a process called aseptic loosening, the bonds of the implant to the bone are destroyed by the body’s attempts to digest wear particles that have accumulated around the joint. These tiny particles originate from the implant and joint surfaces rubbing against each other. Once loosened, the implant may create pain, deformity, or instability. Aseptic loosening is the most common mode of failure of hip implants.

Once chronic deep infection is established, revision arthroplasty is required:
Single-stage revision – You don’t have to undergo two surgeries!
It makes a big difference though whether or not a prosthetic joint is merely loosened or loosened and infected. With infection, usually a first surgery is required to remove the artificial parts and inject antibiotics to kill the bacteria. A new prosthesis will not be placed until several months later in another surgery, once the infection has been cleared. The ONZ German hip specialists will replace the prosthesis in the same operation in which the old one is removed! ONZ co-operates with very experienced microbiologists who will cultivate your individualized antibiotic regimen according to your personal antibiogram. Learn more about revision surgery at ONZ.
